North Hills unveils new math initiative with small group sessions for grades K-1

The North Hills School District is excited to announce a new initiative that will help establish a strong foundation in mathematics for all students. Throughout the school year, we will be implementing short-term, small-group math sessions for kindergarten and first grade students who may benefit from focused instruction in key math concepts.

What are these groups?
These are temporary, small-group sessions designed to provide extra, targeted support for students in math with our schools' dedicated math interventionists/Title I math teachers. Based on our observations and assessments such as i-Ready and Acadience Math, we've identified that some students would benefit from additional, specialized instruction to build specific math skills.

How do these groups work?

  • Targeted Instruction: The groups will focus on essential early math skills identified as an area of need through grade level assessments.
  • Individualized Support: Interventionists will use a variety of hands-on materials, such as manipulatives and visual aids, to help students understand and practice mathematical ideas in a way that meets their specific learning needs.
  • Short-Term: Participation in these groups is not long-term. We will monitor student progress closely, and groups will be formed and dissolved based on changing needs.

What are the benefits?

  • Increased Confidence: Focused support helps students build confidence in their math abilities.
  • Deeper Understanding: Small groups allow for more individualized attention and a deeper understanding of key mathematical concepts.
  • Foundational Skills: Early interventions and supports can lead to significant gains in later math success – research has shown that skills in early numeracy are predictive of proficiency in algebra and future success in math.
